BELGAUM: The gallows are being readied, wheels of the apparatus being oiled, drop shutters set right and men are being trained to carry out the hangings. The preparations at the Hindalga Central Prison here, the only one in the state which has the facility for executing death sentence convicts, are not for any film shoot, but a preparatory exercise.
The condemned cells in the prison house 16 convicts who have been awarded death sentences by the courts for various crime committed by them. The last convict to be executed here was way back in 1983. The prison also does not have a hangman and one of the staffers has to carry out the executions if the clemency petitions pending with the President are rejected.
Clemency petitions of 16 convicts facing death sentences are pending in the Supreme Court and with the president. Among them, four belong to brigand Veerappan's gang, Swami Shradhananda from Mysore and others. Prison superintendent K B Kadbi said: "We are preparing ourselves as the gallows have not being used since 1983. There are 16 convicts facing death penalty in the prison and we do not have any knowledge of when their clemency petitions will be disposed. But as a preparatory step we are keeping all measures ready", he added.
